What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that involves the insertion of thin, sterile needles into specific points specific points, known as acupuncture points on the body. The practice is based on the idea that there are channels or meridians of energy or life force — known as chi or qi (chee) — flowing through the body, and that these channels can become blocked or disrupted, leading to pain, illness, or other health problems. Acupuncture aims to restore the balance and flow of energy in the body by stimulating specific acupoints with needles.

Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years in China and other parts of the world to treat a wide range of conditions, including chronic pain, musculoskeletal disorders, digestive problems, anxiety, depression, and many others. In recent years, acupuncture has gained increasing recognition in the West, and is now commonly used as a complementary therapy alongside conventional medical treatments.

During an acupuncture session, the acupuncturist will ask you about your medical history and current symptoms, and may examine your tongue and pulse to help determine the best course of treatment. They will then insert thin, sterile needles into specific acupoints on your body, which may produce a sensation of warmth, heaviness, or tingling. The needles are typically left in place for 15-30 minutes, and the acupuncturist may adjust them during the treatment to optimize their effectiveness.
